EU, South Sudan Strengthen Green Economy Partnership Through GRE Initiative
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient economic growth during the third Steering Committee meeting of the Green and Resilient Economy Team Europe Initiative (GRE TEI).
The meeting, chaired by the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Michael Roberto Kenyi Legge, brought together representatives of relevant government ministries, co-funding partners including Germany, the Netherlands and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), as well as implementing organizations.
Participants reviewed progress made under the initiative, assessed implementation priorities, and agreed on strategic actions to strengthen agricultural production, improve rural livelihoods, and enhance food security across South Sudan.
As part of the initiative, the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) is implementing the Green and Resilient Economy Business Incubator (GREBI) project, which aims to promote entrepreneurship, value addition, and the growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) within agricultural value chains in targeted regions.
With a total budget of €115.6 million, the Green and Resilient Economy Team Europe Initiative will run until the end of 2029. The programme seeks to support sustainable and climate-resilient economic development by improving food security, creating jobs, protecting natural resources, and strengthening the resilience of communities.
The half-day Steering Committee meeting was organized around three key themes: agricultural production and productivity, value chain development, and natural resource management and protection. Partners presented updates on their interventions under each pillar, exchanged experiences on common implementation challenges, and explored opportunities for stronger collaboration.
The meeting concluded with a series of recommendations and agreed action points that will guide the next six months of implementation, reinforcing the commitment of the Government of South Sudan, the European Union, and Team Europe partners to promoting inclusive and resilient economic growth.
