Kiir Swears In New Elections Commission Chairperson Ahead of December Polls

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday swore in Gabriel Bol Deng Majok as the new chairperson of the National Elections Commission as South Sudan prepares for elections scheduled for December 2026.
Majok, who previously served as a member of the commission, takes over leadership from outgoing chairperson Abednego Akok Kacuol.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Kiir thanked Akok for his service to the country and commended his contribution to the work of the elections commission.

The appointment comes as South Sudan steps up preparations for the upcoming elections, with the National Elections Commission expected to oversee key aspects of the electoral process.
The Commission is responsible for organizing and administering elections in accordance with South Sudan’s electoral laws.
