During the meeting, Dr. Igga reaffirmed the Government of South Sudan’s commitment to implementing the 2018 peace agreement to pave the way for economic transformation and sustainable development.
For his part, the Interim Chairperson of R-JMEC, Amb. Maj. Gen. George Aggrey, said the meeting discussed progress on the peace process and the role of R-JMEC in supporting the peace process in the country.
The meeting underscores the importance of the peace agreement and the December 2026 elections.
South Sudan’s government says it is preparing for elections scheduled for December 2026.
The peace agreement further dictates that the peace process ends in February 2026 but elections must be held three months prior to the end of the transitional period.
The peace accord also required re-unification of the various rival armed groups, re-training them and re-deploying them but those processes are yet to be complete.
The voter registration is yet to begin with elections now less than six months away. However, South Sudan’s government maintains that the polls will go as planned.
