EAC Delegation Begins Consultations on South Sudan’s Political Transition

A high-level delegation from the East African Community (EAC), led by EAC Secretary-General Ambassador Stephen Patrick Mbundi and Senior Constitutional Expert Amos Wako, has arrived in Juba to launch national consultations on the proposed EAC Political Confederation.
On Wednesday, A high-level delegation from the East African Community (EAC) has arrived in Juba to join national consultations on the country’s political transition.
Kawaja Kau Madol, Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs, stated that consultations will begin with the central government before extending to the states.
“The initiative aims to gather diverse perspectives on key political and constitutional issues. The process will convene representatives from government, parliament, political parties, civil society, academia, community leadership, and youth organizations. I urged young people to participate actively in the exercise, emphasizing that youth perspectives must be directly reflected in the transition outcome,”
He added that the consultations will begin with the central government before expanding to key states across the country, including Central Equatoria, Lakes, Upper Nile, and Jonglei.
The nationwide exercise will focus on core structural pillars of the proposed regional confederation, including constitutional design, funding mechanisms, governance frameworks, decision-making processes, and regional integration models.
Government officials called on South Sudanese citizens to actively participate in the process to ensure their views shape the future of the regional bloc. The consultation process will engage all primary stakeholders, starting with the presidency, cabinet, and national parliament, followed by representatives from academia, civil society organizations, youth groups, religious bodies, and political parties.
