UNMISS condemns ambush on patrol in Jonglei that killed two peacekeepers
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Monday condemned an ambush on its patrol traveling to Pajut in Jonglei state that killed two peacekeepers and injured seven others.
The attack was carried out by unidentified armed individuals, according to UNMISS.
Those injured included three peacekeepers, two South Sudan National Police Service personnel and two civilian staff members.
UNMISS said it has deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and support the emergency response.
“Such deadly violence targeting UNMISS personnel who are serving to support peace in South Sudan is unacceptable,” Anita Kiki Gbeho, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative and head of UNMISS, said in a statement.
Gbeho extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the peacekeepers killed and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The mission said attacks against U.N. peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law.
Gbeho called on relevant authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
UNMISS did not immediately identify the attackers or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the ambush.
