UNISFA urges restraint as tensions rise between Ngok Dinka and Twic Dinka in Abyei

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei has called for calm and restraint following heightened tensions between the Ngok Dinka and Twic Dinka communities in the southern part of Abyei.

UNISFA said it was deeply concerned about the recent escalation and urged all parties to refrain from actions that could further inflame tensions and threaten the fragile peace and stability in the area.

The mission called on the communities to engage in constructive dialogue and resolve grievances through established peace mechanisms. It also urged residents to avoid spreading rumors and misinformation that could provoke violence.

“We urge all the parties to preserve the peace and stand ready to deescalate tensions and support a peaceful resolution,” said Lt. Gen. Ganesh Kumar Shrestha, UNISFA’s acting head of mission and force commander.

Shrestha said UNISFA had reinforced its presence across southern Abyei and intensified patrols and engagements with communities to secure the area and protect civilians.

The mission said the area had remained fragile despite relative peace and stability between the two communities following the April 2025 Ngok and Twic Dinka Peace Conference.

Recent reports of mobilization of armed youths from both communities have heightened tensions, according to UNISFA.

The mission recalled the devastating two-year conflict between the Ngok and Twic Dinka that began in 2022, saying it resulted in civilian deaths, mass displacement and destruction of property on both sides.

UNISFA urged all parties to avoid further escalation and work toward a peaceful resolution.
