South Sudan Urges UN, International Partners to Follow Diplomatic Protocols
South Sudan’s Foreign Affairs Minister James Pitia Morgan has urged the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and international organizations to observe established diplomatic rules and procedures when engaging with the government.
Morgan made the remarks Sept. 3 while briefing representatives of UNMISS and international organizations accredited to South Sudan.
The Minister stressed the importance of respecting South Sudan’s sovereignty and the role of state institutions in conducting official relations. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to international instruments, norms and established practices governing diplomatic relations.
Morgan also highlighted the coordinating role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in formal engagements between the government and international partners.
He said diplomatic privileges and immunities should be exercised with due regard for the laws, institutions and procedures of the host country. He encouraged UN agencies and other international partners to engage government institutions through appropriate diplomatic channels.
The briefing provided an opportunity to clarify diplomatic practices and reinforce the need for proper coordination between the government and its international partners.
The Ministry said it remains committed to constructive engagement with the United Nations and other international organizations based on mutual respect, established diplomatic norms and shared objectives.
