Ministry, IOM Advance Flood Protection Plans During Jonglei Visit
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has concluded a high-level mission to Jonglei State aimed at strengthening cooperation on flood risk management and advancing plans to rehabilitate critical flood protection infrastructure.
The delegation, led by the ministry’s Undersecretary, Hon. Sultan Lam Tungwar Kueigwong, and accompanied by officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), met with Jonglei State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok and members of the State Flood Management Team in Bor.
The meeting focused on improving coordination between the national and state governments and development partners to tackle recurring floods that continue to threaten lives, livelihoods and infrastructure across the state.
As part of the mission, the delegation inspected a dike earmarked for rehabilitation under the Regional Climate Resilience Program (RCRP). The project will be implemented by IOM with financing from the World Bank through the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
Hon. Sultan said the ministry remains committed to working closely with state authorities, humanitarian and development partners, and local communities to strengthen flood protection infrastructure and enhance resilience to seasonal flooding.
The ministry said the visit underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to reduce flood risks in vulnerable areas and improve preparedness for future flood events.
It also expressed appreciation to the Jonglei State government, the State Flood Management Team, IOM and the World Bank for their continued partnership in supporting sustainable flood management initiatives across South Sudan.
