President Salva Kiir has called on South Sudanese to embrace unity and reconciliation as the country commemorated its 15th Independence Day, saying solidarity remains the key to overcoming the nation’s challenges.
Addressing the nation on Thursday, Kiir paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the liberation struggle that led to South Sudan’s independence.
“Today marks the historic 15th anniversary of our nation’s independence. This is a day to honor because of the long journey to attain this independence. We must, therefore, pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to secure this independence,” he said.
The President also commended veterans, the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), and members of the organized forces for their continued service in protecting the country’s sovereignty and its citizens.
Kiir acknowledged that the conflict that erupted in 2013 had prevented the country from fulfilling many of the aspirations of independence.
“While our work of national liberation carried clear objectives, the conflict since 2013 has prevented us from fully delivering those promises. Therefore, the solution to our current problems lies in remaining united,” he said.
He emphasized that “the spirit of solidarity, reconciliation, and unity will make our country emerge stronger than ever.
“Turning to the political transition, the President said South Sudan is preparing for its first elections since independence, describing them as a major milestone in implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement and concluding the transitional period that began in 2018.
“We are currently preparing for the first elections since independence. This process presents a milestone in the revitalized peace agreement and will conclude the transitional period underway since 2018,” Kiir stated.
He urged political parties and civil society organizations to mobilize citizens to participate in the upcoming voter registration exercise.
“I urge all political forces and civil society organizations to encourage widespread participation in the upcoming voter registration exercise. This registration will enable our citizens to exercise their democratic rights during the elections,” he said.
The President concluded by calling on citizens to maintain peace during the Independence Day celebrations and the electoral process.
“I urge you to maintain peace. I wish you all a happy 15th anniversary of our Independence Day. May God bless you and the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.
