FEWS NET Warns of Drought and Flood Risks Across South Sudan

South Sudan is facing worsening weather extremes, with persistent drought conditions affecting much of the country while flooding continues in the Sudd wetlands, according to the latest FEWS NET Global Weather Hazards Summary covering July 30 to August 5, 2026.
The report says prolonged rainfall deficits over the past 90 days have led to drought conditions across South Sudan’s equatorial region, with below-average rainfall continuing to affect large parts of the country. Despite the dry conditions, localized areas in western South Sudan received heavy rainfall of up to 150 millimetres during the past week.
FEWS NET also warned that flooding remains a concern in the Sudd wetlands, where inundation continues despite the broader pattern of rainfall shortages.
Looking ahead, the outlook forecasts below-average to average rainfall across most of South Sudan over the next week. Western parts of the country are expected to receive below-normal rainfall, while southeastern South Sudan is likely to experience abnormally high temperatures.
The weather agency cautioned that the combination of drought, localized flooding and extreme heat could negatively affect agriculture, livestock and livelihoods, underscoring the need for continued monitoring of weather conditions across the country.
