Deputy Foreign Minister, UNMISS Discuss New Mission Mandate and Contingency Plan

South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Amb. Akuei Bona Malwal, on Monday received H.E. Graham Maitland, Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Acting Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (Political), during a courtesy visit in Juba.

The meeting focused on the new UNMISS mandate under Resolution 2820 (2026), which extends the Mission’s mandate until 30 April 2027 while reducing its authorized troop ceiling.

The two officials also discussed the ongoing implementation of the United Nations contingency plan and reviewed areas of continued cooperation between the Government of South Sudan and UNMISS.

The discussions reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to maintaining close collaboration in support of peace, stability, and the effective implementation of the Mission’s mandate in South Sudan.
