Warrap State Condemns Killing of Teacher in Wau, Calls for Calm

The Government of Warrap State has strongly condemned the targeted killing of Ustaz Michael Majok Madut Lual, a teacher and member of the Apuk Giir community, describing the incident as a tragic and unacceptable act of violence.

In a press statement issued on 20 July 2026, the state government said Ustaz Michael was fatally shot on Monday afternoon while walking with two colleagues along the eastern bank of Wau Town.

According to the statement, the attackers, who were reportedly riding a motorcycle, selectively targeted and killed him.

The late Ustaz Michael was a graduate in Agriculture from the Catholic University in Wau and was serving as a teacher at Puon-tok Secondary School at the time of his death.

The Warrap State Government extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, and the wider education community. It also urged residents to remain calm and exercise restraint while the incident is addressed.

The statement called on the governments of Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal states to work together to end recurring attacks linked to the Manyang border dispute and to strengthen efforts aimed at protecting civilians and restoring peace.

The government further reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the resolutions reached during the 24 June 2026 inter-state security meeting on the Manyang crisis. It said the initiative is intended to promote peaceful coexistence between the Marial Wau and Apuk Giir communities and prevent further violence.
