The Juba City Council has identified four key priorities for cooperation with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to accelerate urban development and improve public services in the capital.

During a courtesy visit to the UNMISS headquarters in Juba, Juba Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani Swaka met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and senior UNMISS officials to outline areas for immediate partnership.

The mayor highlighted environmental protection and waste management, infrastructure development, security and public safety, and juvenile rehabilitation and social reintegration as the city’s top priorities requiring UN support.

Swaka emphasized the need for robust partnerships with UN agencies to address pressing urban challenges and elevate the quality of life for Juba’s residents.

UNMISS leadership welcomed the proposals and expressed readiness to work alongside the City Council. Both parties agreed to initiate technical discussions to develop practical, targeted interventions across the four sectors.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation to promote sustainable urban development, bolster security, enhance public utilities, and create social opportunities for vulnerable groups across the capital.
