UNMISS trains 30 journalists on protection of children facing violence
The Child Protection Unit of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Wednesday trained 30 journalists on protection of children facing violence in the country.
Kweku Adoah Bassaw, the Team leader for UNMISS Child Protection Unit in the Central Equatoria State Field Office said that together with partners they have established various mechanisms to ensure children are protected from violence.
“With the United Nations community, we have other components, we have the country taskforce monitoring and reporting on grave violations committed against children by armed forces and armed groups,” Bassaw said during the closing of the two-day workshop on child protection at Crown Hotel in Juba.
In September 2023, UNMISS and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) facilitated the release of six child soldiers in Western Equatoria state.
Maj.Gen Chaplain Khamis Edward, the Director of Child Protection for South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) said they are adhering to the national and international principles on child protection.
“There had been a lot of Action Plans and those Action Plans show commitment of the government in tackling issues of child protection or recruitment of children, the army are committed and they are guided by national and international principles,” Edward said.
The training was attended by 26 journalists from different media houses, two from SSPDF media department and the other two from the SSPDF Child Protection Unit.
