600 percent salary increment for civil servants to be implemented in 2024
The government said it will implement the 600 percent salary increase for civil servants starting in January next year.
Michael Makuei Lueth, the national minister of information, communication, technology and postal said during press conference held in Juba on Tuesday.
“The 400 percent pay rise will be affected in the new budget by end of July 2023, it will be received in the salary of July, and the 600 percent increase will be in the supplementary budget and the supplementary budget will be done in January 2024,” Lueth said.
He said the minister of finance has explained to parliament the reasons for delay in implementing the 400 percent increase.
Under the new salary structure, a private soldier earning currently 3400 SSP will be receiving 13,600 SSP with effect from July, whereas grade 17 in the civil service earning 2800 SSP will receive 11,200 SSP.
Last week, the assembly was divided over the new salary structure for civil servants with the main opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in opposition (SPLM-IO) calling for raising salaries by 600 percent.
However, the SPLM led by President Salva Kiir maintained it’s stance on salary increment by 400 percent citing limited resource envelop to effect the 600 percent increase.
The split in the house delayed the passing of the budget but the principle of majority in parliament eventually defeated the opposition.
