South Sudan workers to sign employment contracts

Employers will be compelled to sign contracts with their employees under the new regulations issued on Monday by the Ministry of Labor.

James Hoth Mai, the National Minister of Labor, said the new labor regulations also cater for minimum wage for employees in the country.

“We are advising people that if you are going to work make sure you sign a contract, we are working on guidelines for employment agencies,” he said during press conference held in Juba.

Hoth disclosed that the regulations are meant to protect employees in work places.

“As Ministry of Labor, we have to make sure that we have laws on safety of our employees, we are going to be very tough on this, we have to make sure we put laws that will protect the workers,” he said.

Hoth added they are drafting labor migration policy to regulate migrant workers.

He said there are about 800,000 migrant workers in the country.

Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro, the national minister of public services and human resource development, called on all public and private institutions to implement the new labor regulations.

“South Sudan has all the best laws but our problem is we bypass them, we just ignore them and use our own way,” he said.
