Sudan Hosts More Than 905,000 Refugees and Asylum-Seekers, UNHCR Says

Sudan was hosting 905,349 refugees and asylum-seekers as of Aug. 31, 2026, despite the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023, according to the United Nations refugee agency.
The majority of the refugee population comes from South Sudan, which accounts for 75.7% of the total, followed by Eritrea at 15% and Ethiopia at 7.1%, the UNHCR said in its latest Sudan population dashboard.
The agency reported that 26,870 new arrivals had entered Sudan in 2026, mainly from South Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia. The figures highlight Sudan’s continued role as a host country for people fleeing conflict and insecurity in the region.
Of the total refugee population, 68% were living in camps, while 32% were residing outside camps. Women and girls accounted for 51% of the population, compared with 49% men and boys.
The dashboard also showed that 273,758 refugees had relocated to safer areas within Sudan. Meanwhile, 3.7 million people had departed Sudan for neighboring countries since the conflict began.
White Nile state hosted the largest refugee population, with 451,534 people, followed by Central Darfur with 116,145 and Gedaref with 59,935, according to the UNHCR figures.
The agency reported that 3% of registered refugees and asylum-seekers were persons with disabilities. Children made up a significant share of the population, with 25% of registered individuals aged 6 to 13 and 11% aged 14 to 17.
The UNHCR dashboard provides an overview of refugees and asylum-seekers in Sudan and is based on data from UNHCR, Sudan’s Commission of Refugees and UNICEF.
The figures reflect the humanitarian pressures facing Sudan and the continued need for protection and assistance for displaced populations.
