A delegation from the South Sudan Women’s Union (SSWU) on Thursday met with the Minister of Energy and Dams, Hon. Agok Makur, to discuss expanding electricity access across the country and promoting women’s participation in the December 2026 general elections.

The delegation, led by SSWU Secretary Maulana Mary Agol John and accompanied by union member Betty Martin Apuki, held talks at the Ministry of Energy and Dams headquarters in Juba as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation on national development and women’s empowerment.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed improving access to electricity as a key public service and explored ways to encourage women to actively participate in the country’s upcoming elections.

The SSWU delegation stressed that reliable electricity is essential for development and should be a priority in the government’s service delivery agenda and the electoral campaign period.

The union called on the government to expand electricity coverage to hospitals, health facilities, schools, and other vital institutions across the states. It also urged authorities to extend power to rural and remote communities to support women’s livelihoods, small businesses, and improve living conditions for families.

In addition, the delegation appealed for accelerated investment in energy infrastructure, including dams and power generation projects, to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply nationwide.

Minister Agok Makur welcomed the union’s proposals and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving electricity services across South Sudan. He said the government is working to address challenges facing the energy sector and recognized women as key partners in shaping the country’s development priorities.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing women’s economic and political empowerment, with both sides emphasizing that expanding access to basic services such as electricity can strengthen women’s participation in national development and contribute to credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections in December 2026.
