South Sudan Participates in AU Extraordinary Session on Health in Accra

South Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and advancing public health priorities by participating in the 25th Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council in Accra, Ghana.

The South Sudanese delegation was led by the Minister of Health, Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan Teny, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Amb. Akuei Bona Malwal.

Held under the theme, “Ending AIDS by 2030, Addressing Preventable Maternal Deaths, Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Endemic to the Continent, and Strengthening Health Systems by 2030,” the high-level meeting brought together ministers, health experts, African Union institutions, development partners, and representatives of AU member states.

Discussions focused on accelerating progress toward universal health coverage, promoting health equity, and strengthening national health systems across Africa. Delegates also renewed their commitment to eliminating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030, reducing preventable maternal deaths, and tackling the growing burden of communicable, non-communicable, and neglected tropical diseases.

South Sudan’s participation reflects the country’s continued engagement in continental efforts to improve health outcomes and support collaborative initiatives aimed at building resilient healthcare systems and achieving the African Union’s long-term health and development goals.
