RJMEC Condemns Deadly Ambush on UNMISS Patrol in Jonglei, Calls for Justice
The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has condemned the deadly ambush on a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) patrol in Pajut, Jonglei state, that killed two peacekeepers and injured seven others.
The attack occurred Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, as the UNMISS patrol was travelling to Pajut. The attackers have not been identified.
RJMEC said the attack resulted in the deaths of two UN peacekeepers and injuries to seven people, including three peacekeepers, two South Sudan National Police Service personnel and two UNMISS civilian staff.
The commission extended its condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the peacekeepers killed in the attack and wished those injured a speedy and full recovery.
RJMEC expressed concern that UN personnel mandated to support peace, stability and civilian protection in South Sudan continue to face attacks.
“Such acts of violence are unacceptable and undermine efforts to restore peace, security and stability in the country,” the commission said.
RJMEC called on the relevant authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
The commission also urged the parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) to embrace inclusive dialogue, cease hostilities and fully adhere to the peace agreement.
It called for the resumption of implementation of the Transitional Security Arrangements, including the unification and redeployment of forces, as well as the disarmament of civilians, to improve security and prevent attacks by armed groups.
RJMEC said it stands in solidarity with UNMISS and all personnel working to support peace in South Sudan.
The commission urged communities, national authorities and other stakeholders to reject violence, embrace peace and cooperate in protecting personnel working to advance peace in the country.
