The Pharmaceutical Society of South Sudan (PSSS) has commended the South Sudan National Police Service, customs authorities, and other security agencies for intercepting a large consignment of illicit tramadol at the Nimule border.

In a statement issued to the media, the society said the seizure highlights ongoing efforts to combat the illegal importation and distribution of controlled medicines in the country.

PSSS noted that tramadol is a legitimate prescription medicine used for the management of moderate to severe pain when prescribed by qualified health professionals. However, it warned that its misuse, unauthorized distribution, and non-medical consumption pose serious public health risks.

According to the statement, the growing abuse of tramadol, particularly among young people has been linked to addiction, impaired judgment, mental health disorders, overdose, and other life-threatening complications.

The society further cautioned that the illegal pharmaceutical trade undermines the integrity of the national healthcare system and exposes the public to counterfeit and substandard medicines.

The Pharmaceutical Society of South Sudan called for stronger regulation and enforcement of pharmaceutical importation and distribution, as well as enhanced collaboration among the Ministry of Health, Drug and Food Control Authority, law enforcement agencies, customs authorities, and development partners.

It also urged strict enforcement of prescription-only medicine regulations, increased public awareness on the dangers of medicine abuse and self-medication, and continued investment in pharmacovigilance and border surveillance systems.

PSSS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the rational use of medicines, strengthening pharmaceutical governance, and supporting regulatory authorities in ensuring a safe and accountable pharmaceutical system.

The society further encouraged pharmacists across the country to uphold professional ethics, comply with pharmaceutical laws, and report any suspected illegal medicine distribution to relevant authorities.
