The Political Parties Council (PPC) has registered two additional political parties, bringing the total number of registered political parties in South Sudan to 36.
Speaking during a press conference, PPC Chairperson James Akol Zakayo said the Council met to endorse the updated list of registered political parties and announce key timelines related to the upcoming elections.
“The press conference today is about the meeting that was conducted by the members of the Political Parties Council to endorse the registered number of political parties and to announce July 31, which we have confirmed as the closing date for parties that want to participate in the upcoming election,” Akol said.
He noted that while political party registration remains a continuous process under the law, parties seeking to contest in the elections must be registered at least 180 days before the election date.
“As you all know, the law says the registration is a continuous process, but those who want to participate in the election must be registered 180 days prior to election,” he stated.
Akol confirmed that the newly registered parties are the IO Party and the National Democratic Movement (NDM).
“So far today, we have added the other two parties on the list, and the total number of parties in the country now stands at 36 registered political parties. The two new parties that have been registered today are the IO Party and the NDM Party,” he said.
He described the announcement as an official update intended to inform the public about the status of political party registration in the country.
