Ministerial High-Level Committee Inspects Nimule Border Facilities to Improve Revenue Collection and Trade Facilitation

The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform, chaired by the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Hon. Gen. Pieng Deng Kuol, conducted a field inspection at the Nimule border post to assess operations at the Customs Station, Immigration offices, Rock City and Jebel parking yards.
The delegation was accompanied by the Eastern Equatoria State Government leadership, led by Deputy Governor Hon. Carlo Andrew, and the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) management, headed by Commissioner General Ambassador Moun Deng Ajuet.
The visit aimed to accustom the committee with the working conditions of frontline officers and staff, while assessing the procedures used in clearing imported consignments, trucks, and handling travellers’ documents at South Sudan’s busiest border crossing.
During the inspection, the committee recommended expediting truck clearance and document processing to reduce congestion and align border operations with regional best practices and international standards.
Speaking after the inspection, the Committee’s Rapporteur, Hon. James Mawich, described the visit as comprehensive and valuable to the committee’s mission.
“The inspection was very comprehensive. We inspected the key institutions and witnessed significant achievements, but we also observed challenges affecting the Revenue Authority and other institutions. We assessed several operational areas and found issues that require intervention from both the committee and the leadership,” he said.
Hon. Mawich urged the business community and all stakeholders to cooperate with the committee in implementing the ongoing economic reforms.
“We are calling on the business community to cooperate with the Ministerial High-Level Committee in the interest of implementing the Presidential Order. We also caution anyone attempting to ignore the system or evade their responsibilities. Everyone must go through the proper procedures.”
He warned that failure to comply with the committee’s directives could attract legal consequences, including fines, arrest, or other penalties in accordance with the law.
The inspection forms part of the committee’s broader efforts to strengthen revenue collection, improve border management, enhance trade facilitation, and address operational bottlenecks at the Nimule border post.
