ECONOMIC COMMITTEE HOLDS MEETINGS WITH SECURITY SECTOR, COMMERCIAL BANKS AND TAX COLLECTING AGENCIES OPERATING IN NIMULE

The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform commenced their meetings with the concerned stakeholders in the border post of Nimule as part of their inspection, review and scrutiny of entities involved in revenue collection.

The Committee started their meeting with representatives from the security sector who are deployed to the border station to keep guard of the area and monitor the revenue collection process.

In his opening remarks, the Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Pieng Deng Kuol said their visit to Nimule is to identify the loopholes in the revenue mobilization process and to curb malpractices such as smuggling, unauthorized roadblocks, under-declaration of goods and enforcement of Presidential Order on Cancellation of Non-Statutory Tax Exemptions.

The Committee also met with representatives of commercial banks contracted by the Government to collect remittances from tax payers and deposit them into accounts of South Sudan Revenue Authority.

The meeting discussed the role of commercial banks in implementing the order issued by the committee directing tax payers and clearing agents to remit their payments in cash to address the liquidity shortage in the country.

The branch managers of commercial banks commended the committee’s decision on cash collection and reiterated their commitment to implement the order in compliance with government directives.

The Committee concluded the day’s meeting with customs officials tasked with tax collection at the border post. The chairperson of the committee outlined the mandate of his team and urged for cooperation among all stakeholders deployed at the border station to address the challenges affecting tax collection and revenue mobilization in Nimule.
