Community in Terekeka Receives Civic Education on Transitional Justice
By Kidega Livingstone
Community members and stakeholders in Terekeka County have received civic education on transitional justice, an initiative implemented by the Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice with support from the Norwegian People’s Aid.
The programme aims to raise awareness and promote information sharing among communities to support the implementation of the peace agreement, particularly mechanisms such as the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing, and the Compensation and Reparation Authority. Transitional justice broadly refers to processes that help societies address past human rights abuses and promote reconciliation, accountability, and lasting peace.
Speaking during the session, Programme Manager at the Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice, Taban Silvio, said awareness and access to information are key in helping communities understand and participate in the implementation of the peace agreement.
A representative of the Women’s Association in Terekeka County, Asunta Paul, raised concerns over recent violence in the area. She emphasized the need for forgiveness, support for survivors, and increased awareness—especially among the youth.
Paramount Chief Peter Molala urged communities to embrace dialogue and called on young people to avoid engaging in tribal conflicts.
Meanwhile, the Director of Child and Social Welfare in Terekeka County, Phillip Pitia, highlighted low school attendance among girls and called on parents to ensure their daughters return to school.
Member of Parliament Defora Daniel pointed to ongoing violence that has resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property. She stressed the need to support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.
In a related development, a representative from the Office of the Commissioner, Galdino Wano Laku, noted that lasting peace cannot be achieved without justice. He called for compensation for victims and accountability for crimes committed.
