The Catholic Bishops of South Sudan have warned of a possible constitutional and transitional crisis as the country prepares for the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
The warning was contained in a communiqué issued after the bishops’ annual plenary assembly held from July 15 to 17. The bishops called on political leaders to address unresolved issues through dialogue and ensure the full implementation of the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
Presenting the communiqué on behalf of the bishops, Bishop Mathew Remijo Adam Gbitiku of the Catholic Diocese of Wau said the country must take urgent steps to safeguard the electoral process and restore public confidence.
“We are concerned about the possibility of a constitutional and transitional crisis as the country approaches the 2026 general elections,” Bishop Remijo said. The bishops urged leaders to put national interests above political differences and work together to address outstanding issues in the peace agreement.
They also emphasized the need for justice, respect for constitutional principles, and accountability, saying these are key to rebuilding trust among citizens ahead of the elections.
Bishop Remijo said the Church remains committed to promoting peace, reconciliation, and dialogue as South Sudan moves toward a critical political transition.
