South Sudan and Japan have extended a project to strengthen the country’s customs administration by six months, moving its completion date from January to July 2027 after disruptions delayed planned activities. The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) formalized the extension Monday at the SSRA headquarters in Juba, where SSRA Commissioner General Rizig Dominic Samuel and JICA Chief Representative Maruo Shin signed a document confirming the revised timeline.Launched in February 2024, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of South Sudan’s customs administration and align its operations with international standards.According to the project’s implementation rationale, field activities were temporarily disrupted following an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in neighboring Uganda. Activities later continued remotely after JICA personnel were evacuated from South Sudan in March 2025.The disruptions delayed some planned activities, prompting the partners to extend the project to allow time to complete the outstanding work and achieve its objectives.SSRA Deputy Commissioner General Solomon Ariik Manyok and Commissioner for Strategy, Research and Planning Morris Madut attended the meeting and witnessed the signing. The extension is expected to support continued efforts to strengthen customs administration and improve compliance with international standards.Photo Credit: SSRA
