South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to holding general elections in December, saying the challenges facing the country should not prevent citizens from exercising their democratic right to choose their leaders.Kiir made the remarks Monday while swearing in three newly appointed members of the National Elections Commission, as the country steps up preparations for the long-awaited polls. The president said the elections should proceed as scheduled, according to a statement published by the Office of the President. The swearing-in comes as South Sudan faces the challenge of preparing for elections amid ongoing political and security concerns and delays in implementing key provisions of the 2018 peace agreement. The December vote is expected to mark a significant milestone in the country’s transition from years of conflict toward an elected government. However, the successful conduct of the polls will depend on preparations by electoral institutions and progress in addressing outstanding political, security and logistical challenges.South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but has yet to hold a national general election since independence.
