South Sudan’s National Election Commission (NEC) has launched a training programme for 26 chief returning officers and other election officials to strengthen preparations for the country’s upcoming general elections. The 48-hour training, being held in Juba, brings together returning officers and their deputies from the country’s 10 states and three administrative areas. It focuses on voter registration and the effective management of electoral operations across the country.Speaking at the opening of the training, NEC Chairperson Gabriel Bol Deng said the officials have a critical responsibility in guiding South Sudan towards its first general elections as an independent nation.Bol described the electoral process as a sensitive national undertaking, noting that the country is transitioning from years of transitional governance towards an elected democratic government. He said political parties, presidential aspirants and election officials were entering unfamiliar territory, as South Sudan has never conducted general elections since gaining independence in 2011.The NEC chairperson urged participants to take the training seriously and make full use of the expertise of experienced election management consultants conducting the sessions. He said the programme would equip chief returning officers with the practical knowledge and skills required to organize, coordinate and manage electoral activities in their respective states and administrative areas. The training is part of the NEC’s preparations for the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
