Uganda has secured the release of one of its citizens who was being held in Myanmar, as diplomatic efforts continue to rescue at least 20 other nationals detained in the Southeast Asian country.Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, announced on Friday, Nov. 6, that Myanmar authorities had released Felix Adupe on Thursday evening and handed him over to Edan, a non-governmental organisation providing medical assistance and safe custody.Ayebare said the released Ugandan and 20 other detained nationals are expected to be handed over to Uganda's Ambassador to Myanmar, Betty Bigombe, in Yangon next week. The government is finalising arrangements to facilitate their safe transfer and eventual return to Uganda. The minister added that negotiations were continuing to secure the release of other Ugandans who remain missing in Myanmar. The case highlights growing concerns over human trafficking networks operating in parts of Southeast Asia, where foreign nationals are reportedly recruited through fraudulent overseas employment offers before being trafficked into compounds and forced to participate in online scams. Many victims are lured with promises of well-paying jobs but end up in heavily guarded facilities, where they face confinement, abuse and exploitation.Uganda has previously secured the release and repatriation of citizens trapped in similar circumstances through diplomatic negotiations involving Myanmar, Thailand and regional humanitarian organisations. The government has urged Ugandans seeking employment abroad to verify recruitment agencies and job offers through official channels to avoid falling victim to human trafficking.Authorities say efforts to locate missing nationals and secure the release of those still detained remain ongoing.Photo Credit: The Monitor, Uganda
