The government of South Sudan has provided funding to support preparations for general elections scheduled for Dec. 22, 2026, as the National Elections Commission works to advance the electoral process.NEC Chairperson Gabriel Bol Deng Majok told journalists Monday that the funding had enabled the commission to undertake key preparatory activities, including civic and voter education, the production of voter registration materials and the recruitment of election workers.Bol said the government’s contribution was helping the commission prepare for the nationwide elections, but additional funding and logistical support were still needed to complete the remaining activities. The commission has identified funding, voter registration, civic education and logistics as key priorities ahead of the polls.Meanwhile, Union of Journalists of South Sudan Chairperson Patrick Oyet Charles said the union was committed to working with the NEC to ensure the public receives accurate and reliable information throughout the election period.Oyet said journalists have an important responsibility to inform citizens about the electoral process and help them understand their voting rights and responsibilities. He emphasized the need for professional, balanced and impartial reporting to enable voters to make informed decisions. The NEC is responsible for organizing and supervising elections in South Sudan, including voter registration, civic and voter education, and the management of the voting process. The commission has announced that voter registration is expected to begin in early November, as preparations continue across the country. The planned elections represent a major milestone for South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011 but has yet to hold general elections since independence. However, the commission faces challenges related to funding, logistics and the limited time available to complete preparations before the scheduled polls. The success of the electoral process will depend on adequate resources, effective coordination among relevant institutions, public participation and an environment that allows political parties, candidates, journalists and citizens to participate freely and peacefully.
