African Union Election Assessment Mission Visits South Sudan Ahead of December Polls

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister James Pitia Morgan has received an African Union pre-election and needs assessment mission in South Sudan as the country prepares for elections scheduled for December 2026.

The mission is led by Geoffrey Onyeama, a former foreign affairs minister of Nigeria.

Morgan welcomed the delegation and thanked the African Union for its continued engagement in support of South Sudan’s democratic process.

He said the government remains committed to creating a conducive environment for free, fair, transparent and credible elections. He also welcomed the mission’s consultations with government institutions and other stakeholders ahead of the polls.

Onyeama said the mission’s visit is part of the African Union’s efforts to support democratic governance in its member states.

He said the delegation would meet with government officials and other stakeholders to assess South Sudan’s preparedness for the elections, identify challenges and determine areas where additional support may be needed.

Onyeama also thanked the South Sudanese government for its cooperation and for facilitating meetings with various stakeholders.

The discussions focused on preparations for the elections and the continued cooperation between South Sudan and the African Union during the electoral process.
