Slow peace implementation forcing disgruntled groups into rebellion-civil society

Members of the South Sudan Civil Society Alliance speaking to journalists
The South Sudan Civil Society Alliance, said Wednesday that the transitional unity government needs to speed up implementation of the pending critical tasks to discourage disgruntled groups from opting for the bush.

“The current peace agreement was intended to provide security and services to South Sudanese across the country,” AkuocAjang, the Chairperson for South Sudan Civil Society Alliancetold journalists in Juba.

“If the rebels see that the implementation of the peace agreement is not progressing nothing will motivate them, it is very important that we implement the current peace agreement to persuade disgruntled groups to join the peace deal,” Ajangadded.

Ajang noted that full implementation of the peace deal will help improve security across the country.

He added that peace and security are critical for service delivery to people at the grassroots.

“When the peace agreement was signed in September 2018, the intention was to have a good government that will provide services to the people of South Sudan. We are expecting theparties to have a roadmap because the nation can not go through transition after transition,” he said.

The parties to the 2018 peace agreement are yet to graduate the 83,000 unified forces, enact the permanent constitution and also set up transitional justice, accountability, healing and reconciliation mechanisms.
