South Sudan Says No Confirmed Ebola Cases, Reaffirms Preparedness
South Sudan has no confirmed cases of Ebola and is strengthening preparedness measures amid an outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola, in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Thursday.
The ministry said the government is closely monitoring developments in the DRC and the wider region because of South Sudan’s proximity to affected areas and increased cross-border movement.
“There are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in South Sudan,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that no cases have been confirmed in the country since the outbreak in the DRC began in May.
The Ministry of Health, in coordination with the World Health Organization and other partners, is continuing surveillance, screening at points of entry and coordination with neighboring countries to strengthen the country’s preparedness and response capacity.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized that South Sudan is not experiencing an Ebola outbreak and urged the public, travelers and humanitarian partners to rely on verified information from health authorities.
The government said it will continue monitoring the situation, strengthening preparedness and taking necessary measures to protect public health.
