Ethiopia ready to supply South Sudan with electricity

South Sudan and neighboring Ethiopia are set resume negotiation that will see Juba import electricity from Addis Ababa.
This was revealed Tuesday by Taban Deng Gai, Vice President for Infrastructure Cluster in Juba.
“We have also all decided on MoU and very soon we shall enter negotiation on how to import electricity from the Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia,” Deng said during celebrations ahead of the 11th independence of South Sudan on July 7th.
In May 2022, South Sudan agreed MoU with the state-owned power utility Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) of Ethiopia.
The deal was operational will see Addis Ababa supply 100 Mega Watts of power to South Sudan over three years.
In the years ahead Juba would later on import 400 MW of electricity from Ethiopia.
Nebil Mahdi Abdullahi, Ethiopian Ambassador to South Sudan noted the need to push for the realization of the electrification project.
“We have to push forward the already stated joint electrification project that was signed a couple of months ago,” Mahdi said.
Mahdi stressed the need to strengthen potential energy cooperation for the benefit of both countries.
