An environmental activist group known as “Greening South Sudan”has combined effort with Episcopal church and launched a campaign to plant 10 million trees in the next 10 years in South Sudan.
Greening South Sudan says the move aims at easing the effects of climate change in the country.
“We want to the plant 10 million trees across South Sudan because our aim is to create awareness about climatic change in South Sudan,” Said GarangMaguetGarang, Executive Director of Greening South Sudan.
The tree planting campaign was launched at sherikat, a suburb of the capital Juba on Sunday.
Garang further said the project will create more opportunities to young people across the country.
“We are going to create national nursery beds. I feel bad if things that we can do here in Juba or in South Sudan are imported from other countries. Everyone can plant trees as long you are given guard line or trained on how to do it,” he added.
The tree-planting campaign was graced by Bishop Paul PitiaYugusuku, the Archbishop of Central Equatoria Internal Provinceat St. Peter’s Parish under the theme “Pray and Plant Trees for Climatic Justice and Food Security”.
“We are almost losing the nature God has created and must embark on planting trees in South Sudan,” Archbishop Pitia said during the launch of tree-planting campaign.
Relentless rains in the past three years caused floods in the country which the United Nations says has displaced more than 800,000 people. The UN says the flooding is a result of climate change.
