Logistics Cluster transports 3,077 metric tons of aid across South Sudan

The WFP-led Logistics Cluster transported 3,077 metric tons of humanitarian cargo to 37 destinations across South Sudan between April and June, supporting 43 aid organizations, according to its latest operational report.

The operation took place as South Sudan faced a complex humanitarian crisis driven by conflict, climate-related shocks, disease outbreaks, displacement, food insecurity and economic deterioration.

Poor road conditions, seasonal flooding and limited transport infrastructure continued to hamper access to communities in need, the Logistics Cluster said.

Road transport accounted for 46% of the cargo moved during the three-month period, followed by river transport at 39% and air transport at 15%.

The Cluster also coordinated eight humanitarian road convoys that delivered about 1,417 metric tons of multisectoral supplies and completed 31 service requests to support the delivery of critical assistance to priority and hard-to-reach locations.

In Unity State, the logistics operation supported the cholera response in Leer, Mayendit and Mayom by transporting 30.2 metric tons of emergency relief supplies.

The Logistics Cluster also held four coordination meetings during the reporting period. National-level meetings brought together 56 partner organizations, while 14 organizations participated in state-level coordination meetings.

The cluster conducted three logistics training courses attended by 142 participants from 63 organizations as part of efforts to strengthen humanitarian partners’ operational capacity.

The Logistics Cluster provides coordination, information management, capacity strengthening and common transport services to support humanitarian operations in hard-to-reach and priority areas across South Sudan.
