The Ministry of Energy and Dams and the National Elections Commission have agreed to strengthen coordination to ensure reliable electricity and technical support for South Sudan’s upcoming general elections.

The agreement was reached during a coordination meeting held on Tuesday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Juba between the Minister of Energy and Dams, Hon. Agok Makur Kur, and National Elections Commission member Hon. Francis Luigi Odwok.

The meeting focused on preparations for the December 2026 elections, with discussions centring on the Ministry’s role in providing stable electricity and energy services to polling stations, election headquarters, and data transmission systems across the country’s states, cities, and villages.

The two sides reviewed key areas of cooperation, including developing a technical emergency plan to prevent power outages at major polling centres, deploying backup generators and alternative energy sources to remote locations, and establishing joint operations rooms to enable rapid response to technical challenges during voting and vote counting.

Minister Agok said the Ministry was committed to mobilising its technical expertise and personnel to support the electoral process.

“The Ministry of Energy and Dams is dedicating all its technical and human resources to supporting the Election Commission and providing a stable infrastructure that ensures citizens can cast their votes in a safe and organised environment. Supporting the electoral process is a national duty to which the Ministry, across all its sectors, is committed,” he said.

Hon. Francis Luigi Odwok commended the Ministry’s prompt cooperation, noting that successful elections require coordinated efforts among government institutions and adequate logistical support to ensure a credible and smooth democratic process.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a joint technical committee to oversee the implementation of field plans and regularly update them in line with the approved election timetable.
