It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that I, Elijah Alier Kuai, former Managing Director of the South Sudan Media Authority, pay tribute and extend my condolences on the passing of our esteemed colleague and leader, Hon. Sapana Agyuli Abuyi, Director General for Information and Media Compliance.

Hon. Sapana Agyuli Abuyi was more than a senior official; he was a pillar of institutional memory at the Media Authority since joining in 2017. His dedication and steadfast commitment left a lasting impact on regulating South Sudan’s media sector. His leadership in establishing standards and enforcing compliance was crucial in shaping a more responsible and ethical media environment.

Throughout his tenure, Sapana played a key role in developing policies, rules, and regulations that guide journalism in South Sudan. He helped create frameworks balancing media freedom with accountability, fostering a pluralistic media landscape that serves the public interest. His extensive governance experience, including his time as Governor of Western Equatoria State, enriched the Media Authority’s work with practical insight and seasoned leadership.

Beyond policy and regulation, Sapana was a mentor and guide, passionately supporting staff and journalists alike. He emphasized the vital role a vibrant, ethical media plays in enhancing government service delivery and democratic governance. His approachable demeanour, wise counsel, and inspirational leadership earned him respect and affection from colleagues and media stakeholders nationwide.

He led numerous training initiatives for media stakeholders, nurturing collaboration between the media sector and government. His efforts to build partnerships within South Sudan and across the region strengthened the Media Authority’s capacity and reach. As a team leader, he remained deeply committed to the welfare of his staff and the efficient administration of the Media Authority’s operations, including media licensing and complaint resolution.

The South Sudan Media Authority and the entire media community mourn the loss of a distinguished leader, a trusted colleague, and a respected elder whose contributions were vital to upholding media standards. His passing on July 4, 2026, at Gudele Hospital in Juba, following complications from a severe head injury, is a profound loss to all who knew him and to the media sector at large.

In this difficult time, I extend heartfelt sympathy and prayers for comfort and strength to his family, relatives, colleagues, the Mvolo community, and the people of South Sudan. Having worked closely with Sapana since 2017, I am personally moved by the unwavering support shown by family, friends, colleagues, journalists, and the broader media community throughout his treatment and until his passing.

May the legacy of Hon. Sapana Agyuli Abuyi continue to inspire and guide us all in our shared mission to build a free, ethical, and responsible media that serves the public interest in South Sudan.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

With deepest respect and sympathy,

Elijah Alier Kuai,
