The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has pledged US$100,000 to support the development and strengthening of South Sudan’s inland water transport system, reaffirming its commitment to improving regional connectivity and economic integration.

The announcement was made during the meeting of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority, (NCTTCA)held in Nairobi, Kenya, where South Sudan was represented by the Minister of Transport, Hon. Rizik Zachariah Hassan.

The pledge will support efforts to improve river transport infrastructure and services, which are considered essential for enhancing trade, reducing transport costs, and improving access to remote communities across South.

The NCTTCA meeting brought together ministers and senior officials from member states—South Sudan, Kenya, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda—to review progress on regional transport and trade facilitation initiatives.

During the session, the Council also approved a budget exceeding US$5 million for the 2026–2027 financial year to implement programmes aimed at enhancing transport infrastructure, trade facilitation, and regional economic cooperation along the Northern Corridor.

South Sudan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with regional partners and development institutions to improve transport connectivity, promote trade, and accelerate economic development.
