IGAD Team in South Sudanese on promotion of Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods in the region.

A joint delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) headquarters and the International Labour Organization(ILO), led by IGAD’S Lucy Daxbacher, is in Juba to discuss the ratification and domestication of the IGAD Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods in the Horn ofAfrica.

The delegation met with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Legislation and Justice, as well as members of the South Sudan Council of States’ Legal Affairs Committee (the Upper House of Parliament).

Madam Daxbacher stated, “The IGAD region is host to 300 million people. These people provide a huge market as well as a labor force that, if facilitated by operationalizing the Protocol on Free Movement of People and Goods, can propel the region’s economies forward.”

The team also met with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led by Undersecretary Ambassador Agness A. Oswaha. Ambassador Oswaha pledged to collaborate with other government agencies to ensure the protocol is successfully ratified and operationalized.

The IGAD delegation is scheduled to meet major ministries like Labor, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Workers trade Union, business community, Union of Journalists and the legislative assembly.
