Juba Echo TV, South Sudan’s only private television channel, is now available on the StarTimes platform, expanding its reach to viewers across the African continent.
The move marks a major milestone for Juba Echo TV as it continues efforts to broaden access to South Sudanese news, current affairs, and local programming. Through its partnership with StarTimes—a leading digital television provider with operations in more than 30 African countries—the channel is now positioned to reach millions of new households.
Founded by StarTimes Group, the pay-TV operator has grown significantly since entering Africa in 2008. According to industry statistics, the company now serves 13 million digital broadcasting subscribers and 27 million OTT users as of December 3, 2025. Its mission has centered on making digital television accessible and affordable for African families.
StarTimes operates across multiple transmission platforms, including DTT, DTH, and OTT, providing continent-wide coverage that extends into parts of Europe and Asia. Its competitive strategy—featuring localized content production, low-cost subscription packages, and wide rural outreach—has enabled it to challenge established industry players like MultiChoice, particularly in lower-income markets.
The broadcaster carries more than 630 authorized channels in over 10 languages and operates 43 in-house channels, producing over 30,000 hours of new programming every year. Its investments in local content include collaborations with creators in key markets such as Kenya and Nigeria. One notable example is the launch of the 100-episode Kenyan drama KIU on Rembo TV in 2022, a channel whose editorial policy requires at least 60% Kiswahili content. StarTimes has also secured rights to major African sports leagues, including Uganda’s top-tier football and Kenya’s FKF Premier League.
Industry projections show that StarTimes’ subscriber base will continue to expand. Forecasts indicate the company could reach 19 million subscribers by 2028, placing it in close competition with MultiChoice, which is projected to reach 21 million subscribers, and Canal+, with an expected 11 million. Overall, Africa’s pay-TV market is set to grow by 16 million viewers between 2022 and 2028, with StarTimes playing a major role in driving this expansion.
For Juba Echo TV, joining the StarTimes platform represents a significant step toward increasing the visibility of South Sudanese media and ensuring that stories from the country reach audiences across Africa and beyond.
