Unity state government starts rehabilitating key road linking to Sudan

The Unity state government started on Thursday repairing the road linking Rubkona County to neighboring Sudan after it was washed away by floods in June.

William Dak Koy, the Acting Governor of Unity State said the purpose of repairing the road that links Bentiu town to the oilfields and Rotriah area is aimed to ease movement of humanitarian assistance to thousands of people who fled conflict in Sudan.

Majority of the returnees are being hosted in Rotriah.

“We started repairing the road from Bentiu town and it will be complete within two weeks from now,” Koy said.

He said most roads in the state have been impassable due to heavy flooding since 2022.

“Floods submerged all roads only the main road to Unity oilfield area was passable,” Koy said.

Humanitarian agencies have been struggling to transport food and medical supplies to returnees in Rotriah area located north of Rubkona County due to inaccessible road network.

Hundreds of children suffered malnutrition and severe wasting due to lack of humanitarian assistance caused by poor roads.
