Butchers in Aweil protest demands by authorities to cut price of beef

Butchers in Aweil town of Northern Bahr El Ghazal state on
Thursday held protest following demands by authorities they
reduce prices of beef to make it affordable to the public.
The mayor of Aweil town council, Dut Mou on Tuesday asked the
butchers to cuit prices of beef.

Garang Akec Deng, the chairperson of butchers told journalists
that they don’t have any reason to continue working due to rising
inflation and cost of living.
The South Sudanese Pound has continued to increasingly
depreciate against the U.S dollar, exchanging at 1000 SSP-the
highest since independence of South Sudan in 2011.
“We are like other business owners in town and this is not
working any longer. The town council has set the price of a kg of
cow beef at 1000 SSP and yet we need it to be sold at 3000 SSP.
What can we gain in such business?” Akec said.
Another butcher, Lual Garang Atak said they have requested the
mayor to rethink about his order.
He said they will be out of business if they heed to the Mayor’s
order.
However, Mayor Mou said he will hold another meeting with
butchers to reach favorable agreement on the price of beef.
