Awiel North football team fined 2 million SSP over riotous fans

Awiel North football team has been fined two million South Sudanese Pounds after their fans rioted following the defeat to Pibor football team in the recent final of the Aweil Martyrs football tournament held at Buluk playground on July 16.

Marco Akol Deng, the Secretary General organizing committee for Aweil martyrs football tournament, said the fine will compensate for the properties damaged in the melee that took place after Pbior town team defeated Aweil North 2-1 in the final in Juba.

“The organizing committee resolves that the Awiel North team must pay a fine of 2 million pounds to cover for the losses that occurred during the riots, and failure to pay it deprives the Awiel North team from participating in the tournament for a period of two years,” Deng said during press conference held in Juba on Saturday.

Awiel North team fans invaded the pitch in the 91st minute of the game after sensing their team was on the verge of losing to Pibor.

Deng said the fine slapped on Awiel North team is derived from the regulation stipulated in Article No.78 of the South Sudan Football Association general regulations and paragraph 21 of the tournament.

“The organizing committee for Aweil martyrs tournament condemns the behavior of Awiel North fans, this behavior is not for Aweil and its people,” he said.

The teams that participated in the tournament that kicked off on June 28th included teams from five counties of Northern Bhar El Ghazal state, Gogrial East County of Warrap state and a team from Pibor town.
