Thousands of new arrivals descended upon Nyaruop Port on Sunday along the Nile River in Unity State after fleeing ongoing conflict in Sudan.
Ruot Riak Teny, the chairperson of the relief and rehabilitation commission in Koch County revealed that 12,000 arrived after enduring torturous long journey along the Nile River.
“We have received 12,000 returnees who arrived on 20 boats; we gave them more than 20 cows for their temporary settlement. The Koch County Commissioner also gave directive to traditional chiefs to support the returnees before they are relocated to others areas,” Teny told Juba Echo on Monday.
However, Teny noted that the returnees are in dire need of food, sleeping mats and other basic needs.
“It’s really difficult to accommodate 12,000 people but humanitarian workers are trying their level best to register returnees at the port, some will go to Leer, Mayendit, Rubkona and Koch,” he disclosed.
Teny said the returnees heading to Koch County will be given free land to resettle.
He said that they are expecting more daily arrivals at Nyaruop Port.
