Officials in Unity State during women day celebration call for end to GBV

The government of Unity State has been urged to step up efforts to fight gender-based violence (GBV) during celebration of international women’s day.

Ran Nguany Chakuoth, Project Coordinator forAction for Conflict Resolution (ACR) in Unity state called on authorities to step up efforts to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls.

“The purpose of this celebration is to promote gender equality through innovative technology toward a better South Sudan,” Chakuoth said in an interview with Juba Echo in Bentiu town on Wednesday.

The celebration held under the theme “Digital for all: Innovation and technology for gender equality” at Bentiu Freedom stadium were jointly organized by the state ministry of gender child and social welfare together with ACR with support from Norwegian People’s Aid.

Gattuor Riek Makuach, Director General for Unity State ministry of gender child and social welfare revealed that they will take tough measures against perpetrators of sexual-related violence in the state.

“All perpetrators who have committed crimes against women and girls will be brought to book and will face the law,” Makuach said.

The celebration was also attended by peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), South Sudan People’s Defense Forces SSPDF and police officers.
