Wild hyenas devour dozens of cattle in Aweil South County

More than 12 heads of cattle have been devoured by wild hyenas at Gakrol Payam in Aweil South County of Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.

Residents in the area said that the hyenas have been preying on the cattle since early October.

Garang Deng, one of the affected cattle-keepers told Juba Echo on Wednesday that it is the first time in a decade to witness such incident.

“When you untie the cows and goats in the morning and drive them to the bush, you can make sure that the little boys are not allowed to go and attend to the cows alone. Last week the hyenas killed my cows and those of my neighbors,” Deng said.

He expressed fear of the hyenas attacking people in the area.

Deng appealed to Aweil South County authorities and the state government to intervene and prevent further destruction of animals.

The deputy director in the state ministry of wildlife, Michael Mawein said they have been warning the public against killing wildlife animals because they are a boost to tourism.

He said the problem is that the state government has failed to develop and degazzete game parks to preserve wildlife, adding this would prevent wild animals from straying into public life.
