South Sudan: Heatwaves Affecting Equipment, Activities and Health.
Media:
The heatwave is impacting reporters and their equipment as they stand in the sun for long periods of time. Standby generators and phone abruptly shut down. For example, Oyet Patrick tightens balls of ice at the back of his phone to prevent it from abruptly shutting off. Patrick needs to add more ice before he can finish his reporting.
Schools:
The government has again ordered schools to remain closed for an additional week. This decision comes after schools had already been closed for the past two weeks, highlighting the government’s concern for the health and safety of students during this severe weather condition that is above 39 degrees Celsus. In South Sudan, a heatwave has disrupted learning, forcing the government to temporarily suspend schools for two weeks. Schools resume on March 17, 2025.
Health:
Recent observations indicate that the rates of ladies conceiving in South Sudan tend to decline during heatwaves, contrasting with periods of coldwaves.
The extreme heat, which can reach temperatures of up to 45°C (113°F), poses significant health risks, particularly for pregnant women and their babies. Research suggests that for every 1°C increase in temperature, the incidence of stillbirths and premature deliveries rises by approximately 5%.
In Juba, many families are opting to sleep outside during the night to take advantage of the moderate temperatures. The climate in Juba is characterized by hot and oppressive conditions, particularly during the day, with temperatures often reaching up to 39°C (102°F) in the peak months. However, nighttime temperatures can drop to more comfortable levels, making it more pleasant for families to rest outdoors.
