SSRA Raises Cargo Delays, High Port Charges in Kenya-South Sudan Talks

South Sudan Revenue Authority commissioners raised concerns over high cargo-related charges and delays affecting South Sudan-bound goods at Kenya’s Port of Mombasa during high-level bilateral talks between the two countries.

The concerns were raised during the second Kenya-South Sudan High-Level Bilateral Meeting, held Aug. 24-25 at the Kenya International Convention Centre in Nairobi.

During technical officials’ discussions, the SSRA delegation highlighted challenges affecting the movement and clearance of transit goods, including port inspections, insurance costs, container security fees and delays in customs clearance.

The delegation said the challenges were increasing costs and causing delays for goods destined for South Sudan through Kenya.

The meeting also addressed broader bilateral issues affecting citizens, businesses, students and transporters in both countries.

Kenya and South Sudan are working to resolve outstanding issues and strengthen trade facilitation, customs cooperation and economic relations between the neighboring countries.

The meeting builds on the first Kenya-South Sudan high-level bilateral meeting, which was held in Juba from March 23-27, 2026.

The talks are part of ongoing efforts by the two governments to improve cross-border trade, strengthen bilateral cooperation and address challenges affecting the movement of people and goods between Kenya and South Sudan.
